Residents advised about wastewater overflow into Blue River Watershed

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department reports a wastewater overflow due to a grease blockage.

The overflow, located in a wooded area near 1846 Topping Ave., was found at 9:04 a.m. on and ended at 9:50 a.m. The overflow was approximately 10 gallons per minute for a total of 490 gallons. The wastewater overflowed into an unnamed creek that flows to the Blue River.

The City has posted the affected areas to inform residents of the overflow. Water samples will be collected from the affected areas.

The release of untreated sewage from sewer systems, such as this, is known as a sanitary sewer overflow and represents a potential threat to public health and the environment. Most of the overflows occur during wet weather events. However, in this instance, the overflow occurred during a dry weather event due to a grease blockage. Grease accumulates in the sewer when consumers improperly dispose of grease down the drain.

For more information, contact Colleen Doctorian, public information officer for the Water Services Department at (816) 513-0232.
