International Walk to School Day celebrated

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Hickman Mills School District, LINC and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office celebrated International Walk to School Day this morning as part of the kickoff event for the City’s Active Living Kansas City initiative.

The day began with two “walking school buses,” or two groups of adult-supervised children walking to school in packs while picking up children along the way. City and school leaders participated as adult escorts to the different groups.

"I enjoyed walking to school with the children from Ingels Elementary," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "This was a great day to promote a more active lifestyle and look for ways the City can help our residents be healthier."

The children were joined by KC Wolf and Slugger, mascots for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. Active Living Kansas City staff and Safe Kids Metro KC volunteers provided information and reflective zipper pulls to all the children arriving at the school.

Active Living Kansas City is a partnership within the City of Kansas City, Mo. that encourages healthier eating and the addition of more regular physical activity into daily routines. The initiative is funded in part by a grant provided by the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City. Participating City departments include the Health Department, Public Works Department, City Planning Department, and the Office of Civic and Community Engagement.

Walk to school events and Active Living KC work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of physical activity, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, environment concern and community-building among families, schools and the broader community. Active Living KC will utilize Safety Street and other existing and forthcoming City programs and projects.

Media inquiries on this topic should be directed to Jeff Hershberger, Health Department, at 816-840-2548 (pager) or Dennis Gagnon, Public Works, at 816-513-2659.
