KCI Airport Terminal B road work to begin

The City of Kansas City, Mo.,, Aviation Department today announced that construction on the loop roadway in Terminal B at Kansas City International Airport will begin Oct. 8. During peak times, minor traffic delays could occur, so travelers flying Delta, Northwest and Southwest are urged to allow extra time before their flights. Active curb space will be reduced at times and Southwest’s bag claim will be temporarily relocated.

To minimize the impact of the project on travelers, numerous construction and directional signs will be posted to help drivers navigate through construction areas. Construction may exacerbate the usual mid-week filling of B garage, so garage patrons might consider using A Garage and taking the Red Bus to Terminal B.

The rehabilitation project, which costs approximately $3 million including design and construction, is needed to address roadway deterioration and traffic congestion. After the work’s completion, the road will have a smoother driving surface and there will be a reduced need for maintenance work. Similar work in terminals A and C will occur at a later date.

The project will include constructing three new pedestrian bridges between the roadway and the top level of the garage at the existing stair towers, waterproofing the pedestrian tunnel roofs near the stair towers, full depth repair of identified areas of the roadway, reconfiguring medians, and milling and overlaying the entire roadway. The project also includes replacement of the existing bus shelters with new, larger shelters, improved signage and installation of new light poles. The project was designed by SK Design Group Inc. The general contractor will be Mega Industries Inc.

Construction will be performed in nine phases to minimize the impact to the travelling public. Work will be shut down during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break holiday periods. All traffic lanes will be open during these holiday periods. Construction is scheduled to continue through August 2010.
