City announces “Active Living” school initiative, partnership

The City of Kansas City, Mo., together with Hickman Mills School District, LINC and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, announced the launch of Active Living Kansas City. This City of Kansas City, Mo. initiative will encourage healthier eating and the addition of more regular physical activity into daily routines.

To celebrate the kick off of the City’s Active Living Kansas City, Ingels Elementary and the City of Kansas City, Mo. will join schools worldwide to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

"Gloria and I have seen personally what the benefits of a more active lifestyle can yield. Walking three to four miles a day has improved our health and made us stronger in many ways," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "One of the challenges facing our residents right now is that the healthiest option is often not the easiest option. This initiative represents the City’s commitment to work with the community to make healthy choices easier for our residents.”

Active Living Kansas City is the collaborative effort of several City departments: Public Works, Health, City Planning, and the Office of Civic and Community Engagement. The initiative is funded in part by a Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City grant.

“With the growing obesity epidemic, who among us would not benefit from healthier eating and more active living?” said Dr. Rex Archer, director of the Health Department. “Active Living KC will work with students, community members and administrators to promote healthy options in Hickman Mills neighborhoods.”
