KCI Airport reports August traffic

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that Kansas City International Airport recorded 870,610 passengers arriving and departing through its gates in August, which represents a decrease of 3.9 percent from August 2008. Passenger boardings at KCI were down 6.9 percent, with a total of 425,907 during August. For the year to date, boardings at KCI totaled 3,269,236, a decrease of 13.3 percent from the same period last year.

The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for August was 199. Service was offered to 47 nonstop markets. There was an average of 38,352 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day, down 8.4 percent from last year.

“New nonstop services from KCI are on the horizon,” said Director of Aviation Mark VanLoh. “United Airlines begins nonstop service to San Francisco, California on October 2 and Southwest Airlines begins nonstop service to Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 1. To top it off Midwest Airlines reinstates their popular nonstop service to Ft. Myers, Florida on December 17.”

Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at KCI were down 27.4 percent in August. For the year to date, air cargo at KCI is down 25.4 percent from the same period last year. Air freight handled at KCI during August amounted to over 14 million pounds, which represents a year-over-year decrease of 27.5 percent. Air mail for August was down 27.1 percent from August 2008. The all-cargo carriers reported four daily departures for August.
