Mayor and Council to host second annual City Council Cancer Benefit
City Councilwoman Cathy Jolly, 6th District at large, Mayor Mark Funkhouser and members of the City of Kansas City, Mo., City Council are hosting the second annual City Council Cancer Benefit for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Councilwoman Jolly started the annual event last year following her diagnoses with breast cancer. Proceeds from the event will go toward research targeted at finding a cure for the disease.
The reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 at Seven restaurant, 613 Walnut St., Kansas City, Mo. A $100 minimum donation to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is required to attend, and corporate donations also will be accepted. The event is by invitation only.
The mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health.
“The nation must reaffirm its commitment to find a cure,” Jolly said. “Cancer must be battled with an increase in resources, both in focus and monetarily. Our nation, our world, needs to make a full commitment to finding a cure not unlike our country’s dedication to landing a man on the moon in the 1960s.”
Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer among American women. In 2008, an estimated 182,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. There are approximately 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the nation.
Although all councilmembers and the mayor have been invited to attend, the benefit is not a public meeting and no public business will be discussed at the event.
