Water Services to perform water valve test in north Quality Hill area

Test will shut off water service Sept. 27 from 7 p.m. to midnight

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department will perform a water valve test on Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 7 p.m. to midnight in the north Quality Hill neighborhood, approximately from 5th to 10th streets and from Wyandotte to Washington streets.

The test will temporarily shut off consumers’ water service in this area.Notices have been left for the consumers advising them of this temporary loss of service. Following the test’s completion, a date will be set to replace any inoperable water valves.

“There are more than 30,000 valves throughout the water distribution system,” said Interim Water Services Director Terry Leeds. “These valves allow Water Services crews to take lines out of service to make repairs and connections and to minimize the number of customers affected by water outages. The department is currently requesting bids for a $1 million valve replacement contract to assist the department in upgrading the water distribution system.”

Two valves are currently leaking in the north Quality Hill area, and two additional valves need replacement, said Assistant Water Services Director Jim Mellem.

“Earlier this year during a water main break repair at 8th and May streets, Water Services crews discovered the valves that needed to be repaired,” Mellem said.
