FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 22, 2010

Residents advised about wastewater bypasses in the Northland

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department reports that due to storm related issues and mechanical failures more than 1 million gallons of wastewater was discharged into Walnut Creek and Line Creek Watersheds last night.

Bypasses occurred at:

    Line Creek Pump Station

    Mace Road Pump Station

In addition, the Department is currently pumping sewage into trucks and hauling wastewater to control an overflow at the Tiffany Lakes Pump Station. This pump station is located in the Second Creek Watershed and is experiencing high flows due to the wet weather events the last couple of days.

The release of untreated sewage from sewer systems, such as this, is known as a sanitary sewer overflow and represents a potential threat to public health and the environment. Most of the overflows occur during wet weather events.

For more information, contact Colleen Doctorian, public information officer for the Water Services Department at (816) 513-0232.
