Greater Downtown Area Plan receives two awards
The Missouri Chapter of the American Planning Association selected Kansas City’s Greater Downtown Area Plan as recipient of its “Outstanding Plan” award. In addition, the Plan received a “Merit Award” in the Planning and Analysis category from the Central States Conference of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
“These awards recognize not only the quality of the work by our planning staff and consultant team, but also highlight our ongoing efforts to implement the plan’s recommendations,” said Tom Coyle, Kansas City Planning and Development director.
The Plan, prepared by the City Planning Department in collaboration with the “COR” consultant team led by BNIM Architects, reflects countless hours of work and support from the Downtown community to craft a powerful and implementable vision for the future of the Downtown area.
"I congratulate Tom Coyle and his staff for their role in the hard work that went into receiving this award," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "This is another example of city employees exceeding our expectations and the expectations of our residents."
The Plan establishes a clear statement of the community’s desires for the future. Both proactive and reactive, it reflects the needs and hopes of all neighborhoods within the area and outlines a path to nurture a vibrant, healthy society that embraces its heritage and celebrates its role as the real and symbolic heart of Kansas City.
