City’s KC Green fosters sustainability with SEEC program

As part of its commitment to environmentally-friendly practices, the City of Kansas City, Mo., through its KC Green program, has initiated the 10-month Sustainable Energy Education & Communications (SEEC) program. The City aims to educate its employees about the environmental, economic and social impact of sustainable practices, which would not only reduce operational energy and utility usage for the City, but also create long-term benefits for employees at home.

The KC Green Team will kick off SEEC on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ilus W. Davis Park, 11th and Oak streets, Kansas City. The event will feature prizes, demonstrations and information booths from many departments. In addition to the City, utility companies and a number of City partners will also participate.

"Kansas City continues to be a leader in terms of sustainability and green government initiatives," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "This program will allow city employees to better understand our goals and to be able to participate with us in implementing sustainable practices."

When implemented in other settings, SEEC has been proven to minimize costs, reduce energy usage and improve productivity. The City of Kansas City, Mo. hopes the program’s initiatives will be implemented by its participants and cause a ripple effect on the community at large.

KC Green is a progressive and innovative City approach to sustainability that Mayor Funkhouser, the City Council and City management have identified as a top long-term priority toward making Kansas City a national leader among local governments.
