FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 13, 2006
City provides free electronic construction plans to contractors
Area contractors will soon have access to a powerful new online tool, courtesy of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and the Builders' Association.
The Kansas City Plan Room will launch Oct. 1. This Web site (www.kcmoplanroom.org) will allow contractors to download and print construction plans and bidding documents for free. Non-computer users can access the Kansas City Plan Room with assistance at Internet-viable plan rooms and print houses throughout the city and across the country. In addition, the plan room is an interactive tool which allows potential bidders to make electronic notes on the City's plans, make measurements and count units to cost out a bid.
"This partnership is a great boon for contractors and the City," said Assistant City Manager John Franklin. "By eliminating much of the cost of obtaining plans, we hope to draw more potential bidders to City projects and, in doing so, reduce costs for our residents."
Historically, contractors have used services that charged per-page download fees or a general fee to access bids and plan documents. This initiative provides these documents free of charge, which gives prospective bidders the opportunity to download information and take it to the print house of their choice.
"The Builders' Association believes it is important for public entities to widely and freely distribute their bidding documents to all potential bidders," said Dan Morgan, president of the Builders' Association.
The Kansas City Plan Room will be accessible through the City's online bid page at www.kcmo.org. All City projects advertised before Oct. 1 will remain posted on the World Plan Room (www.westblue.com/wpr.aspx) until the final bid opening.
"The Kansas City Plan Room will have an impact far beyond our city's construction projects," Franklin said. "This program will offer an opportunity to businesses of all sizes to come to the table and bid on City projects. This innovative program may become a gold standard modeled by municipalities across the country."
