Safety a focus during National Preparedness Month

In recognition of September being National Preparedness Month, the City of Kansas City, Mo., Office of Emergency Management reminds citizens to take extra precautions in the case of a crisis.

“The best time to deal with an emergency is before it even happens,” said Jennifer Fales, City emergency management coordinator. “If citizens take simple, inexpensive measures to be prepared for any type of crisis, they will be much better off if something does occur.”

Fales recommends that residents make an emergency plan, put together a 72-hour kit and keep informed of current events, particularly if a potential crisis is looming. The City offers a free Community Emergency Response Team training program for interested residents as well.

Visit to learn more information and access a link to the Office’s comprehensive guide to preparedness, which includes a budget-friendly way to assemble a 72-hour kit. It also lists items essential to a variety of emergency kits, including those for small children, the elderly, pets and cars.

Media inquiries should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer for the Public Works Department, (816) 513-2659.
