FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 2, 2013

How well are you prepared for an emergency?

Learn how a 72-hour kit can help save your family and community

If an emergency happened today, would your family be ready? The City of Kansas City, Mo., Office of Emergency Management reminds residents that September is National Preparedness Month—an ideal time to create a family emergency plan or to practice and improve your existing plan.

Minimize the effects of emergencies such as tornadoes, floods or blizzards by creating a personalized family emergency plan and stocking a 72-hour kit. Instructions are at www.kcmo.org/oem (click on the My Plan button). You’ll also find information on volunteering for free community emergency response training.

General suggestions for emergency supplies include:

    • One gallon of water per person per day and non-perishable food

    • Battery-powered, crank or solar radio/NOAA weather radio

    • Flashlights with extra batteries

    • First aid kit and an emergency whistle

    • Cell phone with solar or crank charger

    • Safe alternative heat source

    • Fire extinguisher

You’ll also want to consider special items like:

    Medications

    Diapers and infant formula

    Pet food and water

    Cash

    Personal hygiene items

Books, games and puzzles for children

As the weather gets cooler, a winter car kit may come in handy. Stock it with an extra outfit of warm clothes, blankets or sleeping bags, tools, shovel, windshield scraper, booster cables, sand or kitty litter for traction and road maps.

By taking the time now to prepare a family emergency plan and gather some supplies, you’ll be ready when severe weather hits.

In addition to the City’s Office of Emergency Management webpage, you also can visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website at http://community.fema.gov or call 1-800-BE-READY,
