Sprint Center wins national engineering awards
One of downtown Kansas City’s most iconic new attractions has drawn state and national attention.
The American Council of Engineering Companies/Missouri awarded Sprint Center the 2009 Grand Conceptor award, the highest award given by the organization in its annual Engineering Excellence awards program. In addition, the structure received recognition in the national Engineering Excellence Awards competition.
“Sprint Center is proud to receive continued recognition for both design excellence and attendance projections,” said Brenda Tinnen, senior vice president and general manager of Sprint Center/AEG Kansas City. “Achieving this recognition is indicative of both our iconic facility and Kansas City’s unbridled enthusiasm for live entertainment."
The City’s Capital Improvements Management Office, a division of the City Manager’s Office, managed the design and construction of Sprint Center. Structural engineering company Walter P Moore nominated the project for the Engineering Excellence Awards competition on behalf of themselves and the City.
"We are extremely proud that the Sprint Center has received this recognition," Capital Improvements Management Office acting director Ralph Davis said. "The artistic vision and state-of-the-art engineering put to use in the Sprint Center's design and construction produced a world-class asset, and it is heartening to see that work acknowledged by the American Council of Engineering Companies."
Sprint Center is Kansas City’s newest landmark and the centerpiece for downtown revitalization. The 18,500-seat, multipurpose arena hosted 130 events and 1.3 million guests in its first year.
The Engineering Excellence Awards competition is sponsored by ACEC/Missouri to recognize quality design and creative application of technical knowledge by engineering firms.
