12th Street Bridge temporarily closed
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department is alerting motorists that the 12th Street Bridge has been temporarily closed. The closure is expected to last at least three days. The closure will allow Public Works crews to address an expansion joint failure and perform preventative maintenance on other expansion joints as needed.
During the closure, it is recommended that motorists use the following detour route:
-South on I-35 to 20th Street
-West on 20th Street to Summit Street
-South on Summit Street to Cesar E. Chavez Avenida (23rd Street Trafficway)
-West on Cesar E. Chavez Avenida to American Royal Drive
-American Royal Drive to Wyoming Street
-North on Wyoming Street back to 12th Street
-South on Genessee Street to 17th Street
-East on 17th Street to American Royal Drive
-South on American Royal Drive to Cesar E. Chavez Avenida (23rd Street Trafficway)
-East on Cesar E. Chavez Avenida to Southwest Boulevard
-Northeast on Southwest Boulevard to Broadway Boulevard
-North on Broadway Boulevard back to 12th Street
The expansion joint failure caused concrete to fall through the deck onto the hillside below, but there was damage or injury reported. Public Works staff has inspected the remaining expansion joints for the portion of the bridge that has been under traffic and found several additional areas requiring attention. Repair crews plan to remove the existing damaged expansion joints and place steel plates over them to allow safe passage of traffic.
The 12th Street Bridge is currently in the third and final phase of a construction project designed to refurbish the structure. The work, being managed by the City’s Capital Improvements Management Office, began in 2004 and is estimated to be complete by fall of 2010.
Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this closure should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer for the Public Works Department, (816) 513-2659.
