City/state services not required for Hurricane Gustav evacuees at this time

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Emergency Operations Center has announced that air evacuees from Louisiana will not be coming to the Charles Wheeler Downtown airport, as had been expected. Other locations around the state also will not be needed at this time.

The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency notified the Emergency Operations Center that due to a short time window for air evacuations, states closer to Louisiana would be used.

The Emergency Operations Center, along with representatives from counties on both sides of the state line, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Metropolitan Ambulance Services Trust, local hospitals and other organizations were called to action to accommodate more than 1,000 evacuees in the path of Hurricane Gustav.

Red Cross workers and government agencies prepared Kemper Arena and North Kansas City Community Centers to hold the first 1,000 evacuees, with secondary sites identified to handle up to 1,000 more.

For more information, contact the Emergency Operations Center at (816) 784-9300
