KCMO WSD Laboratory completes water testing preparedness exercise with EPA, labs in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska

The Kansas City, Missouri Water Services Laboratory completed a regional preparedness exercise earlier this week to test how labs would respond to natural disasters, acts of terrorism and other emergencies.

The Kansas City, Missouri Water Services Laboratory was the primary response laboratory as the Region 7 Laboratory Response Plan conducted its first-ever functional exercise to verify that federal, state and local lab personnel can properly coordinate with each other to provide necessary water testing capacities, in the event that any one lab might find itself overwhelmed by a large quantity of samples needing to be tested in a short period of time.

“Our participation in the EPA Functional Exercise provided an opportunity for us to work closely with other agencies and Laboratories enhancing our ability to respond quickly and effectively in an emergency,” said Laboratory Manager Lorene Lindsay. “ The exercise strengthened the communication networks we have with other Laboratories in our Region and provided a framework for working cooperatively to respond to complex emergency situations involving water quality.”

Seven labs participated in the August 18-25 functional exercise at their respective locations:
Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Division Laboratory, Kansas City, Mo.
University Hygienic Laboratory, Iowa City, Iowa.
Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratory, Topeka, Kan.
Missouri State Public Health Laboratory, Jefferson City, Mo.
Missouri Environmental Services Program Laboratory, Jefferson City, Mo.
Nebraska Public Health Environmental Laboratory, Lincoln, Neb.
City of Olathe Water and Wastewater Laboratory, Olathe, Kan.

The Kansas City, Missouri Water Services Department maintains and operates water collection treatment and distribution systems, stormwater management and wastewater collection and treatment for residential and business customers in Kansas City, Missouri. The department also sells water to 33 wholesale customers in the metro area and treats wastewater for 27 satellite customers. Operation of all three utilities is funded entirely by fees charged to customers based on their use of products and services, not taxes.
