Tornado sirens sounded in southern Jackson County

The City of Kansas City, Mo., sounded the tornado outdoor warning sirens in southern Jackson County at 2:43 p.m. today, in response to several reports of a brief touchdown of a funnel near Interstate 470 and View High Drive.

The reports came from law enforcement, a mutual aid fire company and residents. No damage from the incident has been confirmed at this time. The Emergency Operations Center is not activated, but staff is monitoring the weather situation and is prepared to activate if necessary.

Residents should be reminded that outdoor sirens are intended to alert people outdoors of severe weather situations. Residents are encouraged to obtain National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radios for indoor alerts regarding approaching severe weather. These radios provide constant, useful and up-to-date weather information and are equipped with a special alarm tone that will sound an alert and give immediate information in a life-threatening situation.

During an emergency, the National Weather Service interrupts routine weather radio programming and broadcasts a special tone that activates weather radios, by county, in the listening areas. While they are primarily used for severe weather alerts, authorities also can use these radios to issue warnings about other types of hazards, such as chemical spills or biological hazards.

Project Community Alert is a community-wide effort to distribute weather alert radios. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radios offered through Project Community Alert use technology that allows radios to sound warnings for specific counties.
