City participates in National Night Out

The City of Kansas City, Mo., and Aim4Peace encourage residents to take a stand against crime by taking part in the 28th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

National Night Out is America’s night out against crime and is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate participation in crime prevention activities, and strengthen neighborhood spirit. In 2010, 37 million people participated in National Night Out across the nation.

“National Night Out is a great way for neighbors and neighborhoods to send the message that crime is not acceptable in Kansas City and criminals will not be tolerated,” Mayor Sly James said. “I’m looking forward to attending this year’s event to stand strong with the entire community against crime.”

Kansas City’s free citywide Night Out event will be held Aug. 2 from 6-9 p.m. at Swope Park, located at East Meyer Boulevard and Swope Parkway. Residents are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and enjoy entertainment provided by drill teams, choirs and dance groups. Free food will be provided while supplies last, and youth activities will take place.

In addition, many neighborhood organizations are also putting together their own National Night Out gatherings.

All Kansas City residents, even those who are unable to attend a local event, are encouraged to keep their porch light on and head outside to meet neighbors to discuss crime prevention on the evening of Aug. 2.
