Environmental Achievement Awards recognize City employees
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Environmental Management Commission will present six Environmental Achievement Awards to City employees who have shown significant contribution to the environmental quality of Kansas City. The awards ceremony will be held today, Wednesday, July 13, at 4 p.m. in the Mid-America Regional Council ballroom, 600Broadway St.
The Environmental Management Commission established the Environmental Achievement Awards to promote innovative approaches to environmental challenges and encourage a culture of environmental stewardship among City employees.
To be considered for the award, the acts or achievements must significantly reduce the volume or toxicity of waste generated, prevent pollution, preserve or restore natural lands or habitat, conserve resources, or benefit the environment.
The 2011 award winners are:
Natural Resources Management Division of the Parks and Recreation Department, for the Lakeside Nature Center Environmental Education Program;
Deb Ridgway of the Public Works Department and the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, for the Bicycle Friendly Community, Bronze designation by the League of American Bicyclists;
Central Fleet Division of the General Services Department, for work on the CNG/Alternative Fuel Vehicle Program;
Joe Remmers and Shaun O’Kelley of the Water Services Department, for work on the Birmingham Farm Solar Gates;
Aviation Garden Party of the Aviation Department, for work on the Aviation Community Garden; and
the Energy Conservation Implementation Team of the General Services Department, for work on the Energy Conservation Project.
The City’s Office of Environmental Quality, a division of the City Manager’s Office, accepted nominations for the awards, which were evaluated by the Environmental Management Commission.
