Kansas City to receive national Sister Cities Award

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will receive the 50th Anniversary Award from Sister Cities International. The award will be presented July 15 at the Lou Wozar Annual Awards Ceremony during the Sister Cities 50th Anniversary Worldwide Conference in Washington D.C.

The 50th Anniversary Award recognizes cities who have established a long-term commitment to developing Sister City programs.

For the first time, Mayor Kay Barnes will lead the Kansas City delegation to the annual international conference.

“This is a great honor for Kansas City, and for all of the individuals, both in our city and around the world, who work to make this program a success,” Barnes said. “We are proud to partner with all of our Sister Cities to promote knowledge of other cultures and the importance of international relations.”

Barnes also will have the honor of moderating a panel on the topic, “Achieving the Millennium Development Goals through City-to-City Partnerships.” Barnes was selected because Kansas City has embraced the international perspective in terms of economic development strategies, an element unique to many areas in the United States.

City Manager Wayne A. Cauthen said, “This award is a tribute to our sister cities family who have helped distinguish Kansas City for its international work.”

JoAnna Edgerton, director of the International Affairs and Trade Office and Sister Cities International Board member, will accept the award on behalf of the City.

“We proudly accept this honor as Kansas City approaches its 40th year participating in the Sister Cities program,” said Edgerton.

Kansas City has been involved with the Sister Cities Program since 1967 when its first program was established with Seville, Spain. The city now actively collaborates with 13 sister cites in 10 countries and four continents. Kansas City also has been selected to host the 2008 Sister Cities International Conference.
