Business license task force seeks public input

The business license task force will hold four public hearings to solicit input about the tax enforced by the City of Kansas City, Mo. The task force has been meeting for two months to learn about the business license tax and to research the tax and its application in other cities.

"Our hope is that individual business owners who must comply with the current business license tax would come to the hearings to communicate with the task force regarding the good and the bad issues associated with it," said Deb Hinsvark, chief financial officer for the City.

The hearing schedule is as follows:

July 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Trailside Center, 9901 Holmes Road

    July 25, 3-5 p.m. at City Hall, 414 E. 12th St., on the 10th floor

Aug. 3, 8-10 a.m. at Line Creek Community Center, 5940 N.W. Waukomis Drive

    Aug. 7, 3-5 p.m. at Gem Theater, 1615 E. 18th St.

In response to Mayor Kay Barnes' call for a change in the business license tax, City Manager Wayne A. Cauthen announced in April the establishment of the business license task force to review current processes and recommend changes.

Kansas City's business license tax was imbedded in the City Charter in the 1920s and then amended and enhanced by numerous ordinances over the last 80 years. The current charter language is now obsolete, and in many cases, industry changes have made the tax cumbersome.
