Energy program upgrades near completion at the Health Department
The City of Kansas City, Mo., and Johnson Controls, a global leader in making public and private buildings more energy efficient, announce the completion of a comprehensive energy program at the Health Department as part of the overall energy program instituted by the City.
Johnson Controls designed the energy program, which links energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, to help drive the City’s operational savings. Adding renewable energy as a component of the overall energy efficiency program diversifies the City’s energy portfolio and aligns with the City’s goals to improve the reliability of its energy sources and reduce its environmental impact.
Solar hot water systems were installed in the Health Department building to heat up to 1,000 gallons of hot water per day. The new hot water system is scheduled be activated on Thursday, June 30.
Additional upgrades, managed by the City’s General Services Department to the Health Department building, include LED lighting upgrades with motion sensor controls, mechanical retrofits to heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, improved equipment controls, and the installation of Johnson Controls Enterprise Sustainability Manager (ESM). The ESM will enable efficient access and management of facility data across five municipal buildings: the Health Department, City Hall, Wolf Parking Garage, the Kansas City Police Headquarters and the Communications Center. The web-based platform provides near real-time access to data on energy maintenance, security, compliance and building controls, to support better decision-making by facility managers and retail tenants.
The completed renovations are projected to save the City between $50,000 and $100,000 in energy and utility costs annually at the Health Department facility.
