Accidental shooting at Health Department injures one
At approximately 9 a.m. today, a gun in the handbag of a client of the City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department discharged twice. The first bullet grazed a client in the leg, the second did not hit anyone. Paramedics treated and released the victim at the scene.
Customer service at the Health Department is closed until further notice.
Security guards were on duty during the incident and are working with the Kansas City Police Department, which is on the scene and conducting an investigation.
“The safety of residents and staff at City facilities is our top priority,” said City Manager Wayne A. Cauthen. “We want to assure residents that we continually work to maximize security and minimize any risk to their safety and well-being. The City will continue to evaluate our safety policies and procedures to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors at City facilities.”
The City recently completed an upgrade to its detection system at City Hall, and plans to expand such detection measures at other City sites such as the Health Department upon completion of a citywide security assessment.
