Halfway Home Pet Adoptions Celebrates One Year Anniversary

Halfway Home Pet Adoptions opened in March of 2009, taking over management of Kansas City, Missouri’s municipal shelter. On Saturday, June 12, from noon to 4 p.m. Halfway Home Pet Adoptions will celebrate its first year in business. There will be shelter tours every half hour.

The shelter serves as the holding facility for pets picked up by Kansas City’s Animal Health and Public Safety Division of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department, but also takes strays brought in by the public and animals from families that can no longer care for their pets.

Since opening, Halfway Home Pet Adoptions has had more than 10,000 pets come through its doors. As an open access shelter, Halfway Home Pet Adoptions must take in all animals brought to the shelter.

"Halfway Home Pet Adoptions has quickly become a Kansas City success story," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "More than 3,200 animals have found homes, and another 900 have been reunited with their owners during this unique partnership's first year of operation. Pets are important to many Kansas City families, and Halfway Home is making it easy for families to find - and sometimes become reunited with - these important parts of their families."

Even with the large number of pets, Halfway Home has decreased its euthanasia rate from an estimated 65 percent in 2008 to just over 30 percent, so far, for 2010. The shelter staff works hard to reunite lost pets with their families, place orphaned pets with new adoptive families and transfer at risk pets to rescue groups across the metro and the nation.

Located at 4400 Raytown Road in Kansas City, MO 64129 Halfway Home Pet Adoptions is open 7 days a week. Shelter hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.

Media inquiries about this issue should be directed to David Park, acting director for the Neighborhood and Community Services Department, 816-513-3231.
