Avenue of the Arts receives national honors

Avenue of the Arts was included in the Americans for the Arts/Public Art Network 2005 Year in Review.

Matthew Dehaemers, local artist and Avenue of the Arts 2003 exhibitor, also was recognized in the Year in Review for "Trifecta of Oakdale," which is on exhibit in Salina, Kan.

Jurors Mary Miss, artist, and Robert Rindler, president of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, selected Avenue of the Arts as one of the top 40 of 180 public artwork entrants. Photographs of the Avenue of the Arts 2005 were presented at this year's public art conference in Milwaukee on June 2 and will be included on the Public Art Network Web site ( as a slide show.

The annual Avenue of the Arts is a temporary public art exhibition in downtown Kansas City. The seven-year-old program is sponsored by 360 Architecture, DST Systems Inc., the Downtown Council, and the City of Kansas City, Mo., Municipal Art Commission.

Last year's installation included artwork by local artists Beniah Leuschke, Matt Wycoff, Deanna Skedel, Oz McGuire, Michael Schonhoff and Eric Robertson. The works were installed at six intersections on Central Street from May 1 through Sept. 30.
