Manchester Trafficway Bridge Closure
Public Works Department officials estimate that the Manchester Trafficway Bridge from Gardner to St. John will remain closed for the next 18-24 months. An inspection had revealed that a 125-foot portion of curbing, sidewalk and barrier curb has fallen off. As a precaution, the outside barrier curb and sidewalks on the bridge are being removed as part of an emergency contract.
A $7.4 million project to rehabilitate the bridge was planned to begin this fall. Of the $7.4 million it will cost to repair the bridge, $5.2 million will be covered by federal funds. The rehabilitation project is scheduled to remove and replace the entire driving surface along with minor structural repairs to the bridge.
