Artist selected for East Village project
The Municipal Art Commission has approved the recommendation of a selection panel to have Gordon Huether create artwork for the East Village parking facility. The facility is currently under construction near 11th and Cherry streets. Huether will work collaboratively with 360 Architects to integrate original art into the facility.
The selection panel includes City of Kansas City, Mo., staff, arts professionals and representatives from J.E. Dunn and 360 Architects. Panel members reviewed more than 65 artist portfolios from across the nation, including six local artists. Huether, a California-based artist, was selected from a pool of five finalists.
The project will be funded through the City’s One Percent for Art program. The program, established in 1986, allocates one percent of the construction budget for new and renovated municipal buildings for artwork. This will be the 32nd artwork added to the City’s nationally recognized collection.
