Panel nominates company to manage American Royal
A nominating panel considering proposals to manage the American Royal Center unanimously selected Global Spectrum of Philadelphia, in association with the American Royal Association and Anschutz Entertainment Group of Los Angeles.
The American Royal Center includes Kemper Arena, Hale Arena, Wagstaff Theatre, the Governor’s Exhibition Building, Scott Pavilion and the American Royal Exhibit Halls.
The nominating panel, appointed by Mayor Kay Barnes, interviewed all three respondents to the City’s Request For Proposal today at City Hall. The RFP addressed plans for managing the venue, marketing plans, improving financial performance, previous experience, transitioning of City employees to employment by the management company, management fee and incentive structure, and financial condition of the company.
The nominating panel directed City staff to begin negotiations with Global Spectrum. Any negotiated contract is subject to full City Council approval.
In addition to the Mayor, the panel included: Chuck Eddy, Sixth District Councilmember; Wayne Cauthen, City Manager; Kevin Riper, Director of the Finance Department; Kevin Gray, president of the of the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation; and Warren Erdman, vice president of Kansas City Southern Industries.
Other respondents to the RFP interviewed were: SMG of Philadelphia in joint venture with Charles Hazley; and Creative Partners, a partnership of the employees of the City’s Convention and Entertainment Centers Department and Centerplate (formerly Volume Services America) of Greenville, S.C.
