Two City streetscape plans awarded for design and merit
The City of Kansas City, Mo., City Planning and Development Department has received two prestigious awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects – Prairie Gateway Chapter. The society selected the City’s Main Street Streetscape Plan as recipient of the Honor Award for Built Design and the City’s North Oak Streetscape Plan for the Merit Award in Planning and Analysis.
“These awards recognize not only the quality of the work by our planning staff and consultant team, but also highlight our ongoing efforts to implement the plans’ recommendations,” said Jade Liska, citywide planning division manager.
City Planning and Development designed the Main Street Streetscape Plan in collaboration with the Main Street Corridor Development Corporation (MainCor) and a consultant team led by Confluence.
The Main Street Streetscape Plan was chosen for the Honor Award for Built Design because of its street character and its success in improving pedestrian access. The streetscape’s design implements policies of the Main Street Corridor Land Use and Development Plan. It aims to prioritize pedestrian circulation, build a stronger brand identity for the corridor, and create a unique and identifiable atmosphere that is attractive to new businesses and residents alike along Main Street from 34th Street south to 43rd Street and along 43rd Street from JC Nichols Parkway to Oak Street.
City Planning and Development prepared the North Oak Streetscape Plan in collaboration with a consultant team led by Confluence.
The North Oak Streetscape Plan received the Merit Award because it offered an easy-to-read layout that carefully laid out steps to implement priority projects. It reflected the countless hours and support from the community and City to craft a powerful and implementable vision for the future of the North Oak Corridor.
The North Oak Streetscape Plan drew from the Briarcliff/Winnwood Area Plan, North Oak Corridor Plan and partnerships with North Kansas City, Mo., and Gladstone, Mo. The Briarcliff/Winnwood Area Plan established a goal to develop and complete a streetscape standard for the North Oak Corridor. The North Oak Corridor Plan determined the needs and hopes of the area’s neighborhoods and outlined a path to nurture a vibrant, healthy corridor that embraces its heritage and celebrates its role as one of the major corridors that links the Northland to the heart of the City.
