Public Works recognized for bicycle and sidewalk improvements

To conclude Bike Week, BikeWalk KC, the region’s bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organization, recognized the City of Kansas City, Mo.’s Public Works Department for leadership in providing striped lanes and “sharrows” for bicyclists on roadway projects as well as sidewalk improvements for pedestrians.

Significant accomplishments have been made in the last five years. The City now has 29 lane miles of bike lanes, nine lane miles of sharrows and 63 miles of trails. A total of 287 water inlets, sewer grates and utility covers were replaced with bicycle-safe versions along a 355-lane-mile route where “bike route” and “share the road” signs were installed. Combined, these changes form the beginning of a 600-mile bikeway system. In addition, the Public Works Department recently produced and distributed 20,000 Bike KC maps, which highlight all bike and trail facilities completed to date.

Residents may

visit for an online Bike KC map and safety education resources, or to request a printed map.
