McGaskey named director of Convention and Entertainment Centers Department

Oscar McGaskey Jr., has been appointed director of the Convention and Entertainment Centers Department, City Manager Wayne Cauthen announced today. McGaskey was selected from 123 applicants and six final candidates for the position.

"As the former general manager of the Dallas Convention Center Facilities, Oscar McGaskey’s experience in convention center management, arena management, contract negotiations, sales, and marketing make him an outstanding choice for the position,” Cauthen said. “As we move forward with plans for the downtown arena, McGaskey’s background will be a real asset to the City,” Cauthen added.

McGaskey was general manager of the Dallas Convention Center Facilities from 1992 through 2002.

Under McGaskey’s leadership, the Dallas Convention Center achieved the following:

    Turned a $1.8 million deficit into an operating profit within two years of his appointment;

    Successfully completed two major expansions on time and under budget;

    Received Prime Site Awards for outstanding customer service by Facilities Magazine every year from 1994 through 1999;

    Averaged three million visitors annually and maintained more than a 95 percent customer satisfaction rating.

McGaskey received the Executive Excellence Award for outstanding customer service from the Texas Association of Convention Operations Management in 2000.

McGaskey’s background also includes positions as key account executive with the Coca Cola Bottling Company of Dallas (1991), manager of contract services for the City of Dallas at Fair Park (1988-1991), and general supervisor of operations for the City of Dallas (1986-1988).

McGaskey has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center and a master’s degree from Texas Women’s University.

McGaskey will begin his duties in Kansas City in early June.
