Residents invited to City’s Bike Week festivities

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will kick off Kansas City Bike Week 2012 on Monday, May 14 at 8 a.m. with an outdoor event held on the south side of City Hall, 414 E. 12th St. Residents are invited to celebrate the City’s continued commitment to becoming a better place to bike and walk, alongside Mayor Sly James and members of the City Council, who will make brief remarks.

Since 2008, the City has constructed 17 miles of shared use trails, installed 2.3 miles of sharrows (shared lane markings), added 40 miles of bike lanes and installed 40 new bike racks. During the event, City staff will share what is in store for the coming year.

As a prelude to Bike Week, the City will host a free Family Walk and Bike Ride on Saturday, May 12, beginning at the Spirit of Freedom Fountain, near the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard. Residents are invited to join the City, Black Health Care Coalition, American Diabetes Association and the KC Metro Bicycle Club for a 4.4-mile fun family walk and bike ride along the new Brush Creek/Van Brunt Trail. Parking is available at the Brush Creek Community Center and the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center.

Bike Week, May 14-18, is a regional effort involving local governments, area bicycle clubs and advocacy groups, planning agencies and bike-friendly businesses.
