Small Business Development Division honored with award
The U.S. Small Business Administration has selected the City of Kansas City, Mo., Small Business Development Division as a “2012 Minority Small Business Champion of the Year” for the Kansas City district.
The Small Business Administration presents this award annually to individuals or groups who take a proactive approach to helping minority business owners develop, grow and succeed with their business endeavors.
“This recognition is a reflection of the commitment that staff in the Small Business Development Division display on a daily basis,” said City Manager Troy Schulte. “We are proud of the individual recipients and the collective effort they make to support the City’s dynamic small business community.”
The City’s Small Business Development Division, a division of the Human Relations Department, operates as a one-stop-shop for entrepreneurs needing assistance while beginning or growing their businesses. Their office is located in the 18th & Vine District and provides entrepreneurs with a computer room, conference rooms, business resource library, mediation services, seminars and wireless Internet. Entrepreneurs work with the division’s staff and receive personalized strategic development plans to help their business succeed.
The Small Business Development Division staff includes Delores Jackson, Edwina Jones, Deborah Mason-Ward and Sandra Walker. They were honored at a U.S. Small Business Administration award ceremony on May 1 in Kansas City.
The Small Business Development Division also attended the White House Urban Economic Forum in Kansas City on May 8. This forum is part of a series of meetings being held around the country between senior-level White House advisers and regional government staff who work with entrepreneurs and aim to further economic development in urban areas.
