Announcement of the Office of Civic and Community Engagement

The City of Kansas City, Mo. officially announced a new name and a new mission for the City Manager’s office charged with dealing most closely with residents. The Youth Advocacy office is now the Office of Civic and Community Engagement. This Office will serve as the direct point of contact for academic institutions, civic organizations, and the general public as it relates to coordinated school efforts, volunteerism, and community involvement.

This Office will be a broad extension of the youth development program implemented by the City’s Youth Advocate, Thalia Cherry in October 2004. Since the inception of the program over 3,500 young adults were exposed to public and private sector internships, nearly 2,500 young people completed a minimum of ten service hours and thousands of young people participated in educational, recreational and civic engagement initiatives.

“This is one of the most important aspects of our strategic priorities,” said Councilwoman Marcason, "This office will seek to engage as many residents as possible in the difficult work of changing the landscape of how the community connects through meetings and conversations with groups and individuals held throughout the entire City."

The Office of Civic Engagement will also help strengthen relationships with Kansas City residents in an effort to increase a meaningful engagement with solving community solutions. For example, this office will match those who are interested in supporting the City in areas that were eliminated from the budget with invested volunteers, such as the graffiti program.

The City is one of many across the country that recognize the importance of capturing and utilizing human capital to address multiple challenges. This Office will also be responsible for developing a centralized website which encompasses resources and initiatives throughout the Greater Kansas City area.
