Cooper researching border security with national group

Councilwoman Bonnie Sue Cooper, 2nd District-at-Large, will visit the Arizona-Mexico border tomorrow to address security issues with local and federal leaders. Cooper is the chairman of the National League of Cities International Task Force. Border security has come under greater scrutiny since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The group’s visit to Nogales, Ariz. was arranged by the National League of Cities because Nogales is the prospective site of a quick-crossing auto lane to expedite access for low-risk entrants coming from Nogales, Sonora Mexico.

“Immigration and border crossing issues are important to the citizens of Kansas City and also to the businesses of Kansas City that are shipping products and crossing the border to do business,” Cooper said. “Many Kansas City businesses are growing into Mexico and thus creating more jobs for our citizens here.”
