City advises First Friday patrons to obey liquor ordinances

The Regulated Industries Division of the City of Kansas City, Mo., Neighborhood and Community Services Department is advising visitors to First Friday events in the Crossroads District that alcohol consumption on City streets is not allowed.

Because no one is sponsoring an umbrella liquor license for the Crossroads District, anyone found to be consuming alcohol on public streets and sidewalks can be ticketed by police.

"Shops and art studios can still provide free alcohol, but visitors to First Fridays cannot carry their drinks from shop to shop on the sidewalks and streets," Hadley said. "This is not allowed without a sponsor for the umbrella liquor license."

Under the City's liquor ordinance, a sponsor must first obtain a license for the entire Crossroads District; then individual shops and studios within the district can supply free beer and wine to visitors (no tips or payment allowed) during the First Friday events. An umbrella liquor license for the Crossroads District First Fridays was previously held by the Crossroads Neighborhood Association and expired April 6, 2005.
