City clarifies relationship with Union Station
The City of Kansas City, Mo., has had no involvement, direct or indirect, in the governance of Union Station, Science City or any other attraction in the Union Station Complex since Union Station’s redevelopment was approved by voters in the bistate election in November 1996. The bistate tax was passed by voters in Clay, Platte and Jackson counties in Missouri and Johnson County, Kan.
Union Station’s title is held by Union Station Kansas City Inc., which is governed by a private not-for-profit board of directors. All members of the board are elected by the board. No member of the board is appointed by either the mayor or City Council of Kansas City, Mo.
Union Station Kansas City Inc.’s board of directors consists of civic business leaders from Missouri and Kansas.
“Union Station is a very valued civic asset. It is located within the city limits of Kansas City, Mo., but the City does not have any involvement in its governance,” City Manager Wayne Cauthen said.
