Applications for scholarship grant program due May 1

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Office of Civic and Community Engagement reminds interested young adults that applications for the 2011 Kansas City, Missouri Opportunities Scholarship Fund are due Sunday, May 1. The scholarships will provide recipients a minimum of $1,000 per academic year and can be used for tuition, books, room and board, and activity fees.

The Office of Civic and Community Engagement will help administer this 11-year scholarship grant program funded by The Port Authority of Kansas City, Mo. and area casino gaming operators. It will serve City residents living in households with a total annual income of 80 percent or less of the median income of City households. Scholarship applicants also must be between 17-25 years of age, pursuing educational opportunities at an accredited or certified college, university or vocational/technical school and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

“This is one of the many ways the Office of Civic and Community Engagement connects students to resources in order to transform their lives,” said Thalia Cherry of the Office of Civic and Community Engagement.

Scholarship applications, along with a high school transcript or GED certificate; a 300-word essay; a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, employer or clergy member; and the most recent IRS tax forms of all members of the household are due by May 1, 2011.

Submissions should be made to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation

Attn: Scholarships, 1055 Broadway, Suite 130 Kansas City, MO 64105.
