To register for any of the below fun and educational events, please call the City’s Office of Environmental Quality at 816-513-3452.

Rain Garden Workshop – Learn about the environmental benefits of a rain garden and where to start one. The installation, types of plants and maintenance of these gardens will be discussed in detail. The first 25 registrants will receive a flowering dogwood.

Location: Lakeside Nature Center, 4701 E. Gregory Blvd.

Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

Nature Walk – Join a naturalist at the Lakeside Nature Center for a lunch time hike. The first 25 registrants will receive a KC Green aluminum water bottle.

Butterfly Garden Workshop – Every wonder what a butterfly garden is? Join KC Green at the City’s first butterfly garden. Those who attend will learn about the benefits of this type of garden and how to begin one.

Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

Project Living Proof – Individuals may join the KC Green Team for a tour of Project Living Proof (PLP), a renovated 1930’s-era home with a wide range of state of the art energy efficient, sustainable practices and technology. Those who attend will see up close what actual green upgrades look like in an older home. A home weatherization kit will be provided to participants. The event is limited to the first 25 registrants.

Location: Project Living Proof, 917 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd.

Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

Rain Barrel Workshops – Learn about the environmental benefits of rain barrels and how to make and install them. A completed rain barrel will be given away at each workshop.

Two locations: Ilus Davis Park, 11th and Oak streets, and the Municipal Service Center, 5300 Municipal Ave.

Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

Gas Cap Testing – A leaking or missing fuel cap can reduce vehicle fuel efficiency by up to 2 percent. The gas that evaporates from vehicle tanks also pollutes the air and contributes to the formation of ground level ozone, which is harmful to human health and the environment. Residents are invited to have their gas cap tested and learn more about KC Green. Participants will receive a KC Green bag and educational materials.

Location: KCI – Aviation Administration Building, 601 Brasilia Ave.

Time: 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
