Residents advised about wastewater overflow into Blue River Watershed

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department reports a wastewater overflow due to debris in the sewer line.

A manhole located in a wooded area near the intersection of 54th Street and Elmwood Avenue was overflowing at the rate of 1 GPM into a non-recreational creek leading to the Blue River.

The overflow was found at 10:15 a.m. during a routine inspection. The overflow was stopped at 1:35 p.m.

The manhole is located in a commercial area approximately one-half mile from the Blue River.

Samples will be collected from the creek downstream of the spill. Signs have been posted.

The release of untreated sewage from sewer systems, such as this, is known as a sanitary sewer overflow and represents a potential threat to public health and the environment. Most of the overflows occur during wet weather events. However, in this instance, the overflow occurred during a dry weather event due to a debris blockage.
