Engage KC Leadership Board seeks to develop young leaders

The City of Kansas City, Mo., is recruiting members for its seventh young adult leadership class, one of several developmental initiatives sponsored by the City Manager’s Office.

The Engage KC Leadership Board (formerly known as the Kansas City Youth Commission) helps to build Kansas City leaders of the future by focusing on leadership skills, teamwork and knowledge of the community today. Topics introduced throughout the boards members’ 11 month term include Education, Environment, Marketing and Communications, Public Policy, Governmental Services and Workforce Development. These topics are presented through discussions, tours, seminars and informational meetings. Leaders also participate in a one-day retreat to build relationships and leadership skills.

“The goal of Engage KC is to acquaint young people with these aspects of the community and to increase their awareness of leadership roles that are available to them both now and in the future,” said Councilwoman Cindy Circo, 5th District at Large. “The better we educate our young residents about the facets of life that make Kansas City strong, the better they will be prepared to become our future community leaders. Part of that leadership preparation comes from developing relationships with others, which is also a focal point of the retreat and the sessions that follow.”

Interested young people ages 16-25 may apply online at or contact the Office of Civic and Community Engagement at 816-513-1378. The application deadline is Friday, June 3.

“We really enjoy working with the young adults in this program each year,” said 6th District Councilman John Sharp. “I’m always impressed with how these young people mature and develop an awareness of their own community and learn things they did not know about Kansas City. We look forward to meeting and working with each new class.”

A selection committee comprised of a cross-sector of leaders will review applications and recommend the rising leaders to the Mayor and City Council for final selection. The 2010-11 Engage KC Leadership Board term will run from June 2011 through May 2012.
