Temporary street closures for basketball championships
Public advised to keep valuables out of sight when parking
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department is reminding motorists that temporary lane closures have been made to accommodate the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships, which take place March 8-12.
Throughout the championship events, Grand Boulevard will be closed between 13th and 14th Streets and 14th Street will be closed inside the Kansas City Power & Light District, between Main Street and Grand Boulevard. The closures were slated to begin today and will last through midnight on Saturday, March 12.
Motorists parking vehicles downtown during the championship events are advised that it is always prudent to keep valuables out of plain sight when leaving a parked vehicle. Items such as GPS, laptops, cell phones, audio devices, purses and sunglasses are a temptation for thieves seeking an easy opportunity.
The championships are estimated to have a $14.1 million impact on the local economy.
The Men’s Championships will be played in the Sprint Center and the Women’s Championships will be played at Municipal Auditorium.
For more information about the championships, visit the official fan information site at VisitKC.com/big12basketball.
During the championships, motorists seeking alternate north-south routes across downtown are advised to use Holmes Road and Charlotte Street on the east side of downtown and Main Street and Broadway on the west side of downtown.
Media inquiries about the temporary street closures for the event should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer for the Public Works Department, 816-513-2659.
