Temporary street closures announced for Big 12 events
Visitors advised of parking and bus options
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department will temporarily close Grand Boulevard, from 13th Street to Truman Road; and 14th Street, from Main Street to Grand Boulevard at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March. 9 until midnight on Saturday, March 12. The streets will be closed to accommodate the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's and Women's Basketball Championships.
Kansas City’s Sprint Center, 1407 Grand Blvd., is hosting the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship for the second time March 10-13. The City’s Municipal Auditorium, 201 W. 13th St., will be the site of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Big 12 Championship March 11-14. Those traveling to these events are advised to arrive early to avoid traffic congestion at session start times.
During the street closures, motorists in the downtown area not travelling to the Big 12 events are advised to use Oak Street, Holmes Road and Charlotte Street on the east side of downtown and Main Street and Broadway Boulevard on the west side of downtown.
Vehicle parking capacity in the City’s downtown is sufficient to accommodate event parking and regular weekly downtown parking. Depending on the time of arrival, motorists should anticipate walking three to five blocks from their cars to the venues.
On March 10-13, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority will offer more frequent MAX service to the Sprint Center. The additional service will travel between the County Club Plaza and the MetroCenter Park-and-Ride at Third Street and Grand Boulevard. For more information about KCATA MAX and Metro schedules, visit www.kcata.org or call the KCATA Regional Call Center at (816) 221-0660 weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
