City partners with DOE on LED streetlight test program

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department and the United States Department of Energy will begin a two-year program to test the use of light emitting diode (LED) technology for street lighting beginning Monday, Feb. 21. The test will provide data that will be used to determine the viability of transitioning city street lighting to a technology that is estimated to yield energy and maintenance savings in the range of 30 to 50 percent.

The Public Works Department has selected nine locations in a variety of settings to provide a thorough test. Each test location will receive five LED streetlights that will be evaluated to answer questions related to energy use, operational costs, light reflectivity and the public’s acceptance of LED light characteristics.

Prior to the installation of LED streetlights, illumination and reflectivity data will be collected from the existing streetlights in the evening and overnight hours. After the installation of LED streetlights and at designated times throughout the test period, data will be collected from the LED streetlights during evening and overnight hours.

Media inquiries about the test program should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer for the Public Works Department, 816-513-2659.
