Tree debris collection guidelines

Curbside collection of tree debris will begin Monday, Feb. 11 at 7 a.m. for Kansas City, Mo., residents. Residents are asked to follow these guidelines:

--Tree limbs should be placed along the curb, but not in the street.

--Tree limbs should be less than 12 feet in length.

--For safety reasons, the tree limbs should not be placed under overhead wires, block fire hydrants, or obstruct storm drains. Limbs that are broken and hanging on trees present a potential risk to people and property, particularly when the wind picks up and when it rains.

--Residents are asked to avoid placing debris in piles where they will obstruct the view of traffic intersections, and traffic control signs.

--Residents should not park cars in front of debris piles as it will make pickup difficult for the crews doing the removal.

--Kansas City, Mo., residents who want to drop off their storm debris at their convenience (the sites are open seven days a week, from noon until 6 p.m.) may use these drop-off sites:

North site: Hodge Park, N.E. 96th Street & N.E. Reinking Road.

Central site: Environmental Campus, 4707 Deramus.

Central site: Environmental Campus, 4707 Deramus.

South site: Interstate 470 & Raytown Road (southeast corner of Raytown Road and Interstate 470).

The City Action Center has established a hotline to answer questions about the recovery efforts that are following last week’s ice storm. The hotline number is (816) 513-1ICE (1423). Special needs residents may call the Action Center at (816) 513-1313 for assistance with debris removal so they can be referred to the appropriate volunteer organization.

Individuals and businesses with damages or losses can begin the disaster application process by calling FEMA at (800) 621-FEMA (3362) or (800) 462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.
