City partners for Sustainable Skylines clean air initiative

The City of Kansas City, Mo., has entered into a commitment to sustainability with eight local, state and federal entities to implement the Sustainable Skylines cleaner air initiative in the metropolitan area.

The initiative involves selecting projects that address climate, transportation, energy, land use, resource efficiency, green building and air quality. Projects are chosen for their ability to address these issues and yield measurable environmental benefits within three years.

Mayor Mark Funkhouser will participate in a kick-off event at 1:30 p.m. today at North Kansas City High School’s Norclay Building, 620 E. 23rd Ave.

The partnership includes the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., Johnson County, Kan., the Mid-America Regional Council, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Air and Radiation.

“Sustainable Skylines gives Kansas City a way to address complex environmental issues like climate, energy and air quality,” said U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 Administrator John B. Askew. “The projects undertaken by partners in this initiative will improve the environment and strengthen the economy of the Kansas City area for both the short-term and long-term."

The Kansas City area is the second community chosen by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency to participate in the nationwide Sustainable Skylines pilot program.
