Verdict returned in employment discrimination lawsuit

The seven day jury trial of the Jordan Griffin and Colleen Low v. City of Kansas City, Missouri employment discrimination lawsuit concluded this morning. The Jackson County, Mo., jury returned a 9 to 3 verdict against the City of Kansas City, Mo., in this lawsuit brought by two former employees of the City who lost their jobs as a result of the City’s reduction in force last year, due to budgetary cuts.

In their lawsuit, the Plaintiffs alleged that they were laid off as a result of racial and gender discrimination and retaliation. Both sought compensatory and punitive damages against the City.

In their verdict, the jury awarded Plaintiff Jordan Griffin $345,600 in compensatory damages and $900,000 in punitive damages. The jury awarded Plaintiff Colleen Low $517,500 in compensatory damages and $900,000 in punitive damages. These jury awards total $2,663,100.

“We are disappointed in this morning’s verdict,” said Acting City Manager Troy Schulte. “The effort put forth by the City’s Law Department was considerable and is greatly appreciated.”

The City Attorney’s Office will assess whether there are issues that should be raised in post-judgment motions or on appeal over the next few days.

Media inquiries about this lawsuit should be directed to Galen Beaufort, city attorney, at 816-513-3147.
