Revised: City announces Façade Rebate Program
Due to recent confusion over Façade Rebate Program eligibility, the City of Kansas City, Mo., would like to clarify that only commercial businesses residing in City-designated commercial revitalization areas qualify for the grant.
The City has resumed operations of its Façade Rebate Program, a building improvement program that offers façade rehabilitation rebates to commercial businesses residing in City-designated commercial revitalization areas. A program eligible "facade" is the part of a property that typically faces the street and contains windows, doors, awnings and tuck-pointing for the principal entrances to buildings.
The program aims to improve the aesthetic and commercial appeal of businesses in the targeted areas and plans to leverage private investment to accomplish its objectives. In addition, the program is dedicated to historical preservation and will endeavor to make renovations in keeping with a structure’s original style and character.
The Façade Rebate Program is funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, which provides a maximum rebate of 50 percent per project, or up to $5,000 per non-historic properties and $10,000 for historic properties.
“We are very excited about the rejuvenation of the City’s Façade Rebate. We have found that public dollars used in this program generate at least three times as much in private funds invested into commercial revitalization!” said Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks. “With this limited incentive program, business and commercial property owners are able to make a difference and spur economic renewal!”
The program is designed to complement and support existing and ongoing City and community planning efforts in key corridor areas. This program offers a great incentive to owners of commercial businesses located within these areas.
Applicants must comply with federal requirements for CDBG-funded projects, including prevailing wages. All projects must reside in a low- or moderate-income community within the program’s designated boundaries.
