Mayor’s Task Force for the Arts begins community outreach

Kansas Citians will have a chance to shape the future of their City’s arts and cultural policy later this month.

The Mayor’s Task Force for the Arts will launch a community-wide outreach campaign entitled Envision Arts & Culture KC starting Monday, Jan. 28. The campaign will kick off with a meeting hosted by Mayor Sly James at ArtsTech, 1522 Holmes St., from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This will be the first of a series of public meetings and outreach efforts that Public Art Administrator Porter Arneill describes as a “Festival of Ideas.”

“We have scheduled 25 hour-long, facilitated brainstorming sessions throughout the city between Jan. 28 and Jan. 31,” Arneill said. “These meetings will be held morning, noon and night, and we hope our friends, neighbors and fellow citizens will take advantage of this opportunity to help build Kansas City’s legacy and future as a cultural center.”

Arneill said that interested participants can also share their thoughts and ideas online on the task force’s website, located at

This initiative marks the first comprehensive review of arts-related policy in Kansas City since 1997. The collected information will be the centerpoint of an assessment and planning report, which the City Council will use to update the City’s arts and cultural policy.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this program should be addressed to Porter Arneill, public art administrator, at 816-513-2538 or at
